The Rockefeller Center
The Rockefeller Center was build from 1931 to 1940 and was opened in 1939.
The Rockefeller Center includes 21 high-rises and spans three blocks. The highest building is the “General Electric Building”. It’s 259 meters high with 70 floors.
The Rockefeller was a challenge for the architects, because it’s not just one skyscraper. It’s a whole complex of buildings. The bases of the buildings are 26 meters deep under the earth and every building is connected underground with the other buildings. The buildings are rectangular to give as many rooms as possible as much sun as possible and each window in the building mustn’t be far away than 9 meters from each place in the building.
In the “GE Building” NBC and MSNBC have their headquarters. In addition General Electrics has some bureaus in the building and it’s one of the most important sights of New York City. In front of the “GE Building” is the famous ice-skating ring and the big Christmas tree.
The top of the rock observation deck reopened on the 1st November of 2005. Actually it was opened in 1933, but it was closed in 1986 because the rainbow room bar in the 65th floor expanded. From the top of the rocks observation deck you have a great look on the Central Park on the on side and a look on the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building on the other side. The whole Rockefeller Center spans from 49th to 51st street and from 5th to 7th avenue.
